“Passing Through” is an installation of 48 life-sized stainless steel silhouettes that represent students hiking and engaging in related activities, placed in various locations on the walls of the 600 Building at Tunxis Community College. Tunxis students modeled for the silhouettes, making this a community project and connecting the installation to the college’s population at the point in its history when this major addition was built during Phase II of construction at the college. Participants were selected based on essays they wrote about their journey to Tunxis. On this web page, viewers can identify participants by their silhouettes and read the stories, written in their own words during spring 2013.

Completed in January 2014, “Passing Through” was created by artist Brad Guarino and commissioned by the state of Connecticut for Tunxis Community College through the Department of Administrative Services, Division of Construction Services and the Connecticut Office of the Arts. The $117,000 project was commissioned by Connecticut’s Art in Public Spaces program, a program established by the General Assembly in 1978, which requires not less than 1% of the cost of construction or renovation of any publicly accessible state building be allocated for the commission or purchase of artworks.

The installation can be viewed during the College’s normal hours of operation Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Hours are subject to change during holidays, semester breaks, and when classes aren’t in session. Please call 860.773.1300.
